We wanted an agent people could hand real work to, on terms they can check.

AI now reads, writes and reasons well enough to do real work. But most people still meet it as a place to ask questions. The work that eats their evenings stays theirs: the forms, the comparisons, the follow-ups, the page they keep refreshing.

An agent can take that work. To take it, it has to be given access: to documents, to accounts, and to the ability to send and to spend. That is where most of the risk sits, and where trust is earned or lost.

We decided to build Shft because we wanted an agent that people can hand that access to on terms they can check. That means limits that are visible, tested and enforced in code, and a record of what it did. Everything else about Shft follows from getting that part right.

It also means being honest about where we are. Shft is new, and it opens to people a few at a time.

How we think AI should be used.

These are the commitments we hold Shft to. They are also how we decide what to build next.

  1. Useful

    An assistant should be judged by finished work, not by how much it talks or how long you stay in it. Shft is built to complete jobs, and inside the company we measure ourselves on completed requests, not on tokens or time spent in the app.

  2. Honest about what it is

    Shft is an AI agent and says so. When it writes to someone for you, the message says that an AI agent wrote it, and for whom. A job is only marked complete when there is a result to show, and when something could not be done it says that plainly. It can be wrong, and we tell you so.

  3. Respectful of your attention

    It does not try to keep you busy. The background check that looks for things that need you sends at most three messages a day, stays quiet overnight, says each thing once, and can be turned off. One Pause stops all of your agents.

  4. Respectful of your data

    Your memory, conversations and files stay with Shft, not with a model company, and each step sends a model only what that step needs. You can read what Shft remembers about you and edit or clear it. You can download everything stored about you, and you can delete your account.

  5. Good value

    We track what each completed job costs us, choose the model by the size of the job, and reuse repeated context instead of paying for it twice. That is how we aim to keep everyday use affordable.

What we want to do next.

In short: open Shft to more people, bring it to more devices, and make our safety claims ones you can check. We mark what is under way and what is only a goal, and we have not set dates.
